Application Process

Applications for the 2019 Emerge Louisiana training will open August 3, 2018. Applications are due no later than October 1, 2018.

Please read through all of the information below in its entirety. It is important to have a complete understanding of the application process and training program before you apply.

We encourage you to begin your application well in advance of the closing date due to the detailed nature of the application.

Who Should Apply?

Emerge Louisiana seeks Democratic women who are committed to effective political leadership and interested in running for elective office. Applicants should have:

  • Evidence of political leadership experience or potential, and meaningful involvement in workplace or community;
  • Interest in running for political office;
  • Ability and desire to build effective networks;
  • Ability to articulate a personal political vision;
  • Commitment to full participation and attendance requirements of the trainings.
  • Emerge Louisiana’s signature program is open to self-identified women who are registered Democrats residing in Louisiana.

From the pool of applicants, the Emerge Louisiana Board of Directors and the Executive Director will conduct an interview process designed to identify 25 women who are serious about running for office in the near future.  Applicants must be registered Democrats residing in Louisiana and identify as women. Other than those factors, there is no litmus test to be an Emerge Louisiana class member.  All ages, races, nationalities, religious affiliations, sexual orientation, physical abilities and marital statuses are encouraged to apply.

To be considered for the 2019 Emerge Louisiana training program, applicants must complete a written application by October 1, 2018. Written applications will be evaluated by a selections committee and qualified applicants will be invited to an in-person interview. Invitations to join the 2019 class will be extended in November of 2018.

Emerge embraces diversity and encourages applications from all women regardless of age, race, color, national or ethnic origin, marital status, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, socio-economic status or physical ability.  Our mission to build the bench of Democratic women ready to run for office acknowledges both systemic and historic barriers to running for office as well as the barriers women impose on themselves.

Most candidates agree that running for office can appear overwhelming. Emerge Louisiana will break down the process and help you gain the confidence and skills you need to win.

Louisiana has a pool of highly qualified Democratic women that is being left untapped.  Too often, women do not see themselves running for office – they don’t think they have what it takes to win or they just do not know where to start.  Emerge Louisiana is here to recruit, train and support women running for office.  Why not YOU?  Let us help you be a force of change.

* Applicants must be a registered Democrat, identify as a woman and reside in Louisiana.

If financial concerns are holding you back from completing your application, please reach out to Executive Director Melanie Oubre at melanie@emergelouisiana.org.

Fundraising Commitment
As part of each class member’s fundraising training, she will be required to raise a minimum of $500.00 for Emerge Louisiana during the 2019 calendar year, separate and apart from any fundraising she may do towards her own tuition. The training program will offer opportunities and support for participants to fulfill this requirement. The program is committed to helping women become excellent fundraisers, and raising funds for Emerge Louisiana is a great way to perfect this skill.
